The 16 best spots to watch the sunset in Montreal (2024)

This imposing cathedral, one of the largest in the world, is home to an art museum and gardens as well as organ concerts and tours. It's also a popular pilgrimage site for religious and non-religious visitors alike.

A really special Catholic shrine that is worth visiting, especially at sunset. There were many people gathered on the front steps together "worshipping" by looking at the city as the sun set, talking, laughing, evening having a secret drink in the case of a few young people. We enjoyed spending 90 minutes and the brutal architecture. I think the organ is my favorite feature, after the crucifix behind the altar.I would love to attend a service sometime to hear the music and acoustics! The blue chapel is eerily beautiful and made me reconsider colored lights in sacred settings. It's really beautiful at night!Everyone was so kind, from the shuttle driver to the people visiting. You can walk up the hill but I recommend the shuttle.

This majestic church was one of the highlights of our visit to Mont Royal. It's interior is much more modern looking than other basilicas, and it's newer of course, but no less beautiful or grand. There's lots to see, different rooms and sanctums on different levels, each with its own character and story. Spend $2 and get the guide. And be sure to light a candle in the gorgeous Votive Chapel.

Amazing story of a beautiful church, with wonderful history of healing ❤️‍🩹.We had a guide walk us through the whole church as I wanted the whole history,Not just to wander alone. Our guide she explained all the healing and the testimonials, how the father started in a small room, and lived there till he died. How his body is buried in the Church including his heart ❤️ which is on display which someone stole the heart held it for ransom for money, but later returned it when no one would pay the Ransom fee. Loved the Water coming out of the stone, candles. Be sure to say prayers there. EnjoyThe view of the city is wonderfulGo slow and if you can Hire the guide for $6Worth every penny.

Impressive oratory of st Joseph. The front entrance/garden seems to be under construction. But it won't affect your experience. You can take a bus on the right side (when facing the oratory) of the main entrance. Although it should run every 10-15 min., sometimes they can be very late and in the winter evening it can take a long time before it comes. After Sun down, it gets very windy and cold.Do not miss the crypt under the main chapel. It's not easy to find following the sign. But your will be well rewarded when you find it.

Beautiful church located on a hill. They are a making wheelchair accessible ramp from the bottom so you can actually go up from the main entrance all the way into the oratory. There is also two parking lots one located on the lower level and one located at a higher level of the building.Their garden is really peaceful walk and ends at a nice fountain.Quite a marvel to see how well kept and clean this building is. Very cool place to visit and it is free entry!

This church is uphill but no worries there is free parking at the top and even free bus services are provided. The church has a cafe, museum and stores to shop. The view from the top is the best thing there. Must go place if you are in Montreal.

Simran S — Google review

It's really a great place. Everyone should visit it once. Awesome landscape view in every weather. The crypt is really beautiful and very peaceful. The whole vibe is amazing. Although I am not Christian but the whole experience of lightening the candle in the crypt and praying was out of the world.

Amazing architecture, history, artifacts and art. Not to mention the spiritual presence there. You can park on site and walk up the hill or take a shuttle bus up the steep road trail. The view from above and below is spectacular. Learn about the interesting life of Father Andre. It's $5 for parking and a donation is appreciated. You can ask the spirit of brother Andre to say a prayer for any loved ones that are I'll or for yourself. You will not be disappointed Ina visit to this amazing international landmark.

Outstanding architectural feat with a good overlooking view of Montreal. We visited on a tour to make it easier to travel to this location and were not disappointed by its history, significance & design. The inside is 60s in design, and so not as colourful as many churches of other times, but still it’s various levels and character shine through in the building size and complexity!

Fantastic place to visit and surprisingly, it is free admission. Parking is $5 is you want to park close by, otherwise you can park on the street. The place is under renovation (exterior side), so there is a shuttle bus to bring you up. There is also an outdoor terrace that let you see a spectacular view of the city.

This was such a wonderful experience and I can’t believe it was free! Don’t stop at just the basilica, there’s a really nice statue garden and a tomb on the lower level that is a really beautiful area (no photos out of respect for that but trust me you want to go). Parking is $5 CAD and well worth it as you can park on top of the hill. I have a knee injury and struggle with stairs, so I was very relieved to find that there are escalators and elevators in the building. The garden does have a bit of stairs so be aware, but other than that and going down for a photo op in the front of the building, they’re completely avoidable.

It is such a beautiful church. I loved the architecture. They have 6 levels but some levels are not accessible. They also have a panoramic view of the city from the 3rd level. Currently they have some construction going on and getting a parking spot is difficult. They provide shuttle service every 10-15 minutes if parking is not available near the church. They also have a small cafe in case you want to grab a bite. They request for a $5 donation at the entrance except on Sundays. I visit this place every time I visit Montreal.

This is an awe-inspiring structure that showcases remarkable architectural beauty. The grandeur of its design, with towering spires and intricate details, leaves a lasting impression. The interior of the oratory exudes a sense of tranquility and serenity, creating a peaceful atmosphere for visitors to find solace and inner peace. The panoramic views of the Montreal downtown from the observation deck are simply stunning, offering a picturesque backdrop for capturing unforgettable moments. Whether you are seeking spiritual solace or simply appreciating the beauty of the surroundings, St. Joseph Oratory is a place that captivates both the heart and the eyes.Don't miss the opportunity to visit this remarkable landmark and experience the sense of wonder it evokes.

Avinash J — Google review

Just gorgeous. Massive and you wonder how they built this feat on highlands overlooking Montreal. There is a small museum, great outdoor scenes of Montreal and a magnificent church with such beauty and simplicity at the same time. Would recommend people to take the shuttle bus up to St. Joseph’s, it’s a 10-12 mins walk upwards but quite steep and if difficult for older audience (or those with knee issues).

Mohammed S — Google review

The grand architecture is stunning. From a high position, you can overlook the entire city of Montreal. The front square is under renovation, and although there is a parking lot, there is a long queue. Parking lots elsewhere are a bit far away. But it's unique and still worth a visit.

Peter P — Google review

Absolutely a must visit place. The church upstairs was stunning and gorgeous. As well as the below church where you can feel the time and have prayers with candles. The view was amazing from the top.

I am not spiritual at all but I do enjoy getting to see some of these enormous and eccentric churches out there. This is definitely one that is on top of the list. Let me warn you there are a ton of stairs here. Which we didn't realize and we were already pretty exhausted from walking onto Mount Royal that same morning but it was worth it. The sheer size of the church is really a sight to see and you can fully immerse yourself here if you are spiritual going to a mass that is being held or purchasing some holy water in a commemorative bottle that you can also have blessed by someone there. Lots of viewing points and they also have an outdoor Garden that you can walk around complete with a fountain. Again just be warned there are a lot of stairs here but it is also accessible. Definitely worth a stop if you are visiting Montreal.

It's a church. How do you rate a church? It's big, and it has some peculiar features, such as being able to see it's "back end", where it sits on the underlying rock, pretty cool. Outside of that, the typical creepy Christian stuff, people's hearts, sarcophagi, etc. Nice views. Friendly caretakers.

Tomasz J — Google review

I love this place. I come to walk around the grounds and reflect. It's peaceful. Everybody is respectful. So many stairs so it is also great exercise! This is my go to spot for sunsets in Montreal (especially when there is an eclipse). It's also FREE!

Outside and gardens are great, but inside was not at all what I expected. More modern than what I’ve visited before. Still very beautiful. Several interesting areas and view of city. Also, lots of construction and materials in otherwise pretty view.

Lynnette S — Google review

If you’re visiting Montreal, you have to visit this church, it has the real heart of father Joseph. very nice and spiritual place, the church built in the hill so you can enjoy the city view. No tickets required, it’s free. There is escalators and elevators. Parking is free and there, two parking one down the hill and one up.

For those who are religious, it is a place of great faith, extremely beautiful and calm. Its churches are well maintained and beautiful. And for the non-religious, it is still worth knowing due to the monumental architecture of this place. It has a beautiful garden to visit in other seasons other than winter.

Leandro S — Google review

A really nice piece of religious architecture that stands tall on top of the hill. This is a rewarding site to visit by walking up the hill from it. This is a really nice place to walk around and explore. There are lots of interesting things to see and places to reflect.

I visited Saint Joseph’s Oratory this weekend. This place is an amalgamation of architecture, tranquility and history. The city view from the top of the Oratory is fantastic and inside there are two churches at different floors, both has a unique view and design. During winter you can take free shuttle services from the gate because it’s bit difficult to walk on a steep road especially when it is windy and snowy.

Shikha S — Google review

The church located at hill point. Very huge building structure. When we stand in front of church balcony, seen around awesome view from the church. I think this is the tallest church in Canada. Interior of the church nice architecture with coloured glazing long windows. So many floors here. Lot of shops and food court are here. Brother Andre heart preservation in fourth floor.

It was a great experience, the place is peaceful and not too crowded. The views from the roof are just amazing, you can catch a beautiful sunset from here. Mind you the closing time is not accurate, closes 30 mins prior to the time stated on Google.

During the Easter long weekend, I had the pleasure of visiting Montreal and stopping by the Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal. The $5 parking fee was a small price to pay for the experience that awaited. As I approached, I noticed some reconstruction work underway outside. It seemed they were making the site more accessible by adding an elevator for those who can't climb the stairs, which is a thoughtful addition.Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the peaceful atmosphere. I spent some time just sitting and taking in the serenity. The architecture of the building is impressive, and from the front top, there's a lovely view of the university and the neighborhood below. One of the highlights of my visit was the lack of crowds. It made the experience more intimate, and I was able to enjoy the surroundings at my own pace. I had a great time with my friends, and we all agreed that it's a perfect place to spend a couple of hours for some peaceful contemplation.Overall, my visit to the Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal was a memorable one. I would highly recommend stopping by if you're in Montreal and looking for a peaceful escape.

It is awesome. Anyone can be mesmerized with this oratory. For parking ticket price is only 5 dollars. You can park downstairs or you can park upon hill area. Escalator facilities available. You can have a view of whole Montreal by telescope/binoculars only in one dollar. Everything awesome.Superb. In Prayer area there was huge peace and silent. 10/10. Five star is very less for this sant Joseph church.

During my visits to Saint Joseph’s Oratory, I have consistently been struck by the sublime nature of this magnificent church. The architectural grandeur and serene ambiance create a truly unique experience that resonates with me deeply each time I visit. The Oratory not only stands as a beacon of spiritual significance but also as a testament to extraordinary artistry and craftsmanship. Its peaceful surroundings provide a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life, allowing for moments of reflection and tranquility. I wholeheartedly recommend Saint Joseph’s Oratory to anyone seeking a place of beauty and peace.

Great experience for any family. It was amazing to see all the different nationalities that came the day we went. Stone work was amazing inside and out, but I had a great experience of history.

SHANON R — Google review

Great historic, gothic inspired Catholic church. I'm not religious at all, but I can appreciate the great architecture, arts, and history of this place. I try to find dark history in places like this. And you will definitely find some here if you look carefully. At the top of the crown, of St. Joseph's oratory's first bell, which is on display, there appears to be four figures that look like Aliens Xenomorphs. Keep in mind that this place was built in 1904, way before the movie came out. This church is also probably the best place in all Montreal to watch the sunset. It was a great experience with a crowd upwards of 100 cheering as the sun set.

Absolutely must-see. Massive piece of architecture with its age-old stone walls overlooking Montreal. Each floor offers breath-taking views that will leave you in awe.

Jill S — Google review

A must visit if you’re in Montreal! Quant and peaceful with stellar architecture. There was a construction up front so we had to walk a bit to get there, but even the walk was so beautiful. Plus, the deck has an amazing view for photographs. Definitely one of my favourite spots from my visit to the city. Highly recommended!

Antara D — Google review

One side of the Cathedral outside seemed to be under renovation. A huge, beautiful Cathedral though, with a nice view from atop. Nice gift shop as well inside. There was a Mass underway when we visited the Crypt.

Jaya J — Google review

The majestic structure on the hill top is beautiful simple and divine.Architecture is grand in size. Great infra and facilities including accessibility facilities for the challenged.Very reasonably priced cafeteria with nice food optionsViews from the top of the surrounding city and other areas.A must go to place in Montreal

My initial experience at Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal left me astounded by the grandeur of the structure, its rich history, and exquisite architecture. The panoramic views from the top were breathtaking. Established by Saint Brother Andre, this vast shrine dedicated to St. Joseph offers a plethora of sights and insights. The Basilica and Crypt were particularly remarkable, providing a serene atmosphere for lighting votive candles. It's truly a haven of profound faith and tranquility.
