The Sphinxman's prayer: Oh, Father, may we, as oncoming Alpha men, make full development so that we may uphold the high standards of Alpha Phi Alpha - Manly, Deeds, Scholarship, and Love for All Mankind - throughout eternity. Amen.

What is the Sphinxman Credo? As a Sphinx, I will uphold high scholastic standards, high moral character, brotherly love, personal progress, loyalty, and the respect of womanhood to the best of my ability.

It employs an icon from Ancient Egypt, the Great Sphinx of Giza, as its symbol. Its aims or pillars are "Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love For All Mankind," and its motto is "First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All." Its archives are preserved at the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center.

Our Fraternity's motto of "First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All", embodies our history as the first intercollegiate Fraternity founded by African American men; our mission to provide service to our community; and our charge to our membership.

I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary Under Pontius Pilate He was crucified, died, and was buried.

The word “Creed” comes from the Latin word “credo” which means, “I believe.” The Creeds are the statements of our basic beliefs as Christians. In the Episcopal Church, we say both the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed in public services of worship.
